⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Eyes Rutherford
Age: 14
Canon: Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning
Canon Point: Picking up Kanone from the airport.

Background:
    [ canon ] [ history ]
Due to the limited appearances Eyes has in Alive, I'll also be using Bonds of Reasoning and light novel supplemental material.

Personality:
"Eyes Rutherford... As he's quiet, he might be more troublesome than Hilbert."

At a glance, Eyes appears to be haughty, cold, and unapproachable. And to a point, that's all true. When his mother died, Eyes vowed to become a 'demon who sheds neither blood nor tears,' in order to confront the dark fate that looms over him as one of the Blade Children. The result in present day is that his expression never seems to change from the aloof one he wears, yet beneath that expression he is calculating, manipulative, and when the situation calls for it, charismatic. Eyes is intelligent, and knows how to use his abilities well when it comes to assisting the other Blade Children, and which is precisely what makes him dangerous—because he can be so quiet, one wouldn't suspect these things. No one would know that as a child he killed insects and animals for the sole desire to kill, that he's someone who has been hunted and is ready to launch into stardom through the piano he was tied to as a child.

Of course, Eyes is more than that. He has built for himself a strong armour so that his emotions would not interfere with what have to be done, but Eyes still is, as several have put it, a soft and kind person. It may only show around people he has developed stronger bonds with at this stage, but for those who have earned it he puts their happiness above all else. Even knowing that there is no hope for the Blade Children, Eyes is putting in all his efforts into making sure the others fight and don't lose hope themselves. It could be said that this is a selfish way of thinking, but to him their happiness means everything. He could be called weak for this, but it also makes him strong for being able to do so.

Another thing about Eyes is that he is patient—you have to be when your best friend happens is a cheerful young man who easily kills people and asks that you order his lunch afterward. It isn't to say that he has an endless supply of said patience either; Eyes can get irritated surprisingly easily, and doesn't hesitate to put someone down if he feels like it—the most prominent example being the number of times he thinks Kousuke is a moron. It also ties in with the attitude he sometimes carries of being above others, which isn't entirely without justification from his point of view. This line of thinking does land him in a few rough spots later on in his life, and it's not entirely out of the question that he might run into such situations where he finds himself in trouble because the believed himself above his opponent's capabilities. But after that, Eyes is versatile. Even when in trouble, he is quick to make what he can of it and charge forward with what needs to be done, which is why he is so often Kanone's aide and later on the one the other Blade Children look to for leadership.

This isn't to say that Eyes' personality is entirely made of his characteristics as a Blade Child and the role it pushes him into. Though his emotions may be carefully locked away, he does still have a dark and sometimes morbid sense of humor, sometimes tying in with his current disregard for the lives of those who aren't Blade Children. He's brutally honest most of the time, and doesn't sugarcoat things while also having high expectations of others. Anyone he doesn't deem to rise to these standards is sometimes met with this morbid humour and disregard, but when it counts he quickly drops it and reverts to his more serious persona, to the one which locked away his emotions. He is also capable of holding grudges, even if he can put them aside long enough to work with someone he holds one against; however, this does not stop him from arranging for a person's destruction if it comes down to it, which he is able to do by manipulating and using others perhaps a bit too easily.

Along with all of this, Eyes is a pragmatic young man and uses whatever means necessary to achieve his goals. Thus if you want him to believe in something, you need to be able to prove that it is worthy of his belief, which is not something Eyes gives so readily even if, deep down, he is desperate to. It is all too easy for him to brush off something as unworthy of that and his efforts, but once he does give it? You'll find yourself with unwavering loyalty, even if he still displays it in that aloof and distanced manner of his. This acceptance can be noted in little moments where he does something as simple as reach out a hand to help someone up, or visit a friend who might be depressed. For all that he claims to be a tearless demon he is rather perceptive of other's feelings, such as when discussing with Kousuke his feelings for what happened in Japan and whether he was really all right with returning to England, telling him that he could return to settle his feelings if he really wanted to.

But even with all this, even with his hardened heart, Eyes is still that soft person Kanone claims him to be. It's why he's held on to so many secrets, it's why he pushes himself and why he hardened that heart to begin with, and why he will later on step up to hold his group together when his most cherished person betrays them. At the very least he can recognise when he wants to feel certain emotions, but because he guarded himself so well he no longer remembers how to. It's why he is the way he is, even without the fact that it could also be a result of his fate as a Blade Child. Rather than give in to the despair entirely, Eyes tries to find beauty and hope in the world even though there is no guaranteed proof of it, often leaving him to endure it alone without others realising that he is. If it's for the sake of his precious comrades, he will do and sacrifice what he must to keep their happiness going.

Abilities:
High intelligence, observational skills, sharp reflexes, and refined fighting skills. Eyes is from the theoretical next evolution of humanity, but these abilities are not so supernatural that a normal human might not be capable of it with training. Eyes is unnaturally observant, and having the ability to predict outcomes with surprising accurateness and his violent tendencies are still worth noting, particularly when he seems to have an affinity for strangulation.

Regarding his unique skills among the Blade Children, Eyes is most recognised with his skill regarding music, most especially the piano. Although he is only just debuting in current time, he will later ascend as a pianist whose skill is second only to Kiyotaka Narumi. He also takes on the role of strategist among them, at times acting as their leader (and actually becoming so later on) and ensuring an escape route for all their escapades.

Regarding the curse he inherited, should Eyes be placed under a significant degree of emotional distress his will would be overtaken by one intent on wiping out humanity, without having to wait for his twentieth birthday. There is no specific set of condition for what could trigger a Blade Child, but it's safe to say that Eyes would use every measure necessary to prevent this from happening and remain himself.

Alignment:
Peromei ■ At this point it is true that Eyes has learned to successfully lock away his emotions, unable to shed tears even when he might want to and recognises that he otherwise would. However he does, without a doubt, edge along the line between hope and despair even now. Out of all the Blade Children he is the only one to know of the existence of another devil, yet he keeps it a secret from everyone else so that they may have hope in his stead. In fact, he desperately wants to hope even as he lives with that despair, playing Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude as a reflection of that. For all his locked emotions, what he feels beneath that lock is profound. And as time goes on and developments unfold, it becomes all the more apparent that out of all the Blade Children, Eyes is perhaps the one with the most hope.

Other: Given happenings with potential castmates, it is entirely likely that Eyes will turn to forcing him to be apathetic in response. Given he had been on the island before, he knows that his despair can have a disasterous effect and this is his answer to keeping it in check. It's highly unlikely it will be permanent should castmates and potential CR intervene, but a strong possibility as far as a coping mechanism goes.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

Sample:
Adjusting to change was necessary—this was a truth Eyes had accepted long ago, a code he had lived by from the moment he became aware of his fate as a Blade Child. If he couldn't accept that truth, then he would have perished long ago.

But this change was one beyond the capabilities of his imagination. No, putting it in such words wasn't an accurate way to put it, because ever since the discovery of a second devil he had known the possibility of god's little brother aligning with him. To come together to this degree, however? Could very well be described as a nightmare, if he allowed himself to think of such words.

The fact of the matter was that he wasn't allowing himself. In fact, if anyone were to ask him what he thought of the situation, of these two young men who insisted on looking after him or what it felt like to have returned to Verens, he could sincerely answer with... nothing. There was nothing he could do about the people who seemingly looked after him, as they were free to do as they wished, and there was nothing to say about being back on an island he had had no attachment to the first time, when he had allowed himself the curiosity to try and explore its secrets as brief as his stay had been.

It's not normal, they might say, but he wasn't a normal child to begin with, and he was fine with that. He was perfectly fine sitting in this field just beyond the city's outskirts, allowing the wind to play with the lavender tresses of his hair. Though he looked at the sky, he didn't admire the colours as he sometimes did or find inspiration for his music from it.

... In reality, he had locked away his music as well. Perhaps it was that abrupt, small reminder that prompted what happened next.

The air seemed to have almost frozen with the abrupt drop in temperature, and the grass at his feet wilted until it was practically black. It takes him a moment to realise it had happened, but when he did look down there was only the arch of an eyebrow to show his acknowledgement. No... this was not the desired result, he had to do better. With a quiet exhale, he closes his eyes and focuses on the black nothing, determined to not allow it to happen again before he ventured to 'home.'

He couldn't allow it to happen again.
